A Practically Perfect Set in Every Way

Re-opening the dollhouse of my imagination led me to appreciate the wonderful world of Disney once again. The national touring production of Mary Poppins started its week long bonanza with new songs along with adapted and old. The story still follows the Banks family that is run by the overpowering, strict father who has little compassion for his children Jane and Michael. Out of the blue, Mary Poppins drops in to teach the children manners and the father how to love again. In contrast to the…See More

"I hear your complaints, but I ask you - did it work?  It's ridiculous, no doubt, but did it do what it set out to do? "

"Really interesting observations about the timing of lighting.  I also liked your comment about the VCR in the opening, great hook."

The Celtic Cure for Winter

Mesmerized and inspired to journey to the Irish countryside, the world renowned musical ensemble, Celtic Women gave me solace in their captivating performance at the Orpheum this past Saturday eve. Made up of talented vocalists, Chloë Agnew, Lisa Lambe, and Susan McFadden, and energetic violinist Máiréad Nesbitt, they are supported by back-up vocals, two percussionists, a piano player, two bagpipers, and a variety of stringed instruments. Their venue incorporates solos by each of the Irish…See More

Flashinspiration

The spark of the eighties came down like a flashflood; bringing the exhilaration of questions already been answered through the overused VCR and the thoughts of what destruction will result. Flashdance The Musical made its way to the Orpheum with talents perfect for each part. The story follows a strong-willed girl, Alex Owens, whose dream is to dance among the best. While denying her dream to only be that, she spends her days working a construction job and her nights dancing at a night club.…See More

Performing Wizards

It is surprising how one can be so entertained by observing the abuse of a catatonic child. On Saturday, I went to see Southwest High School’s production of The Who’s Tommy. For those who are not familiar with the popular British band from the 60s and 70s, The Who released their rock opera album in ’69 which was later turned into a movie in ’75. The story starts at the beginning of the Second World War when a young couple conceives a child. The husband is sent off to fight while the wife, Mrs.…See More

And Now for Something Completely Broadway

If you were a Jew making a sandwich, dressing it in beef would probably not be the best idea. So making a parody of a movie that was already the nonsensical conglomeration of British wit, is in turn probably not the best idea. Monty Python’s Spamalot will be playing at the Orpheum for one more night, March 16th. Combing every favourite line on every fan base, Eric Idle wrote an achronological retelling of the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. King Arthur sets out on a quest to find knights…See More

"First two sentences do a great job of summing up your experience (and mine I guess).  There is a tension to watching BoM that seems to be plucked so expertly by the creators.  So, I'm also glad you mentioned the writing.  Maybe…"

MORe MONster Jokes: Non-offensive Aftertaste

Never before have I had so much fun while being offended in my entire life. I am not a Mormon, but at times I felt as if clapping might be considered a sin. The Book of Mormon is sold out at the Orpheum Theatre. For those of you who are lucky enough to go see it, get ready to strap on your “I <3 Romney” shirts and answer your door ready to receive the priceless political commentary by the creators of South Park. The story of two polar opposite Mormons, Elder Price who is admired by all and…See More
