Walking into the Orpheum Theatre Tuesday night, the stage was a street in New York, with aspects of neighboring buildings on the sides of the stage. The grungy feel extended to the farthest seat, giving the audience the feeling of what an alleyway might look like in the Big Apple. Everything was so simple yet intricate, leaving the audience a feeling of anticipation. Rent, here in Minneapolis until June 11, satisfied that anticipation and provided a show that did not disappoint.
Christopher comes into his father’s bedroom, frantically looking for something. The only light in the scene is the flashlight he uses to look for his book he’s writing. Going into details about where he was checking, he shines the flashlight at the audience as though they are where his beloved book is. He then listed off everything he found under the bed: a cookie, underwear with a little pee, a girly magazine, just to name a few. After his investigation of the bed, he runs to the closet.…Continue
"Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome," are the first words heard as the Emcee intrigues the audience. The lighting is dark, with a blue spotlight on Emcee. Emcee starts in a black leather coat, inviting the audience to relax and enjoy. The cabaret girls then walk out and Emcee introduces them in a seductive manner.
