"Great details!  I feel like I was there.  Even though I'm not familiar with Imagine Dragons, I really take away a clear sense of the show you saw."

Supercalifragi-yawn

On April 23rd, I saw Richard Eyre’s Mary Poppins at the Orpheum Theatre. I found the set impressive, the acting adequate, and the length unfortunate.  The play opens with a title screen that drops down in front of the stage. It was simple and effective, showing a night sky, skyline, and the title in red. The windows in the houses were translucent, so the blue backlight shone through. A similar charming technique was continued throughout the play using multiple scrims and windows in…See More

Kickin' It at Kickin' It Irish

Kickin’ It Irish, directed by Natalie O’Shea, is a showcase for modern Irish step dancing and traditional Irish music. I saw a performance at Steppingstone Theatre on March 16th (aka St. Paul’s Paddy’s Day, according to the band). It was very modern treatment of a traditional dance form. One of the opening numbers was 15 year old  Liam Slattery Irish dancing to “Harlem Shake”, then breaking into freestyle, naturally. Nearing the end of the show, there were remixes of Irish tunes with “Moves Like…See More

Aida: A Lyracal Love Story

AidaPantages Theatre, MinneapolisJanuary 23rd, 2013Aida, directed by Peter Rothstein, is presented as the touching love story of a captured Nubian princess and an Egyptian Captain. As it was, I felt the romance was a stumbling block to the part of the story that was, for me, far more interesting, the politics and friendship between Aida and Amneris. If Aida is a great love story, than the direction could have been improved, as I found the romantic plot to be an obstacle to the more interesting…See More

"You, not rant about gender equality?  What???   As always, your voice is clear, your observations informed, your descriptions solid.   Yet, there is a really interesting thesis in that opening paragraph - what is the central storyline…"

Man-Eating Plant at Patrick Henry High School

Patrick Henry’s production of Little Shop of Horrors on March 9th was a typical fun high school musical; budget was low, experience scarce, talent untried, and enthusiasm high.

The set was nicely done. The walls around the stage were covered by plants. There was a smooth-working door, and a grid  that gave the illusion of a barred window - a device which the cast used to their advantage. Inside the “flower shop” was a desk and a shelf covered in plants. Outside, Skid Row was strewn…

A Radioactive Experience - Imagine Dragons at the Varsity Theatre

The indie rock band Imagine Dragons’ Night Visions Tour is a visual and auditory spectacle. I attended their sold out show on March 8th at the Varsity Theater, attended mostly by others in their teens and 20s.

After two engaging and unique opening acts who warmed up and excited the audience, the Varsity Theatre was plunged into darkness. A purple blacklight glow slowly rose from behind the band.  The light show was a central aspect of their performance, colors flashing in time,…

That was really well written, with lots of good describing words in all of the paragraphs. It is long, without being to long.
