Sugar Helps the Medicine Go Down

Mary Poppins, a whimsical Disney classic, is showing at the Orpheum and it is a show you do not want to miss. Liberties are taken throughout the production, but a fantastic cast, amazing set design and interesting choreography makes up for the blemishes. Broadway Mary Poppins gives an energetic and modern spin to the original movie. The beginning of Mary Poppins filled me with the organic feel I got as a child when I watched the movie but as the play unfolded my feelings began…

Flashdance

FlashDance

Kyanna Sturm

The Orpheum hosted 80’s musical Flashdance. Flashdance tells the story of Alex, a construction worker by day and a club dancer by night, chases after her dreams. Alex falls in love with prince charming, who happens to be her employer at the construction job and is on and off but in the end all is well. I left the Orpheum that night with a spark of encouragement and inspiration and many adults, including my mother, left…

Production Anyone?

Aida, a story about the captured Nubian princess falling in love with the enemy soldier, who is set to be married with another princess, captures the audience of all ages. Written by Elton John and Tim Rice, Aida opened at Pantages theatre Wednesday January 23rd. Aida continues playing until January 27th for all the music admirers and real production goers. For a smaller, local production, I was blown away at the cast’s talent. If you are uneasy and pondering the question of, is it…

"Ladies and... Ladies"

“Ladies and... Ladies.” I took my straight, white father to the show and when I told him, “tonight we will be seeing Priscilla Queen of the Desert.” He replied with, “Oh s***.” Priscilla Queen of the Desert invited a range of people to the show, which can still be you. If you love “punny” things, exotic moments, and laughing, this show will bring a smile to your day no matter what mood you began with. By the end of the show he left with the totally opposite…

Catch This if You Can

On December 11, “Catch me if you can” opened at the Orpheum and slowly but surly, people filed into their seats. Based off a true story, written into a book and then into a movie, “Catch me if you can” was condensed from a life story into a must see, 2 hour production. Based off of ex conman Frank Abagnale Jr, “Catch me if you can” was put together in a mesmerizing “show theatre” style. Although the Broadway musical is…

As far as my personality goes I am very independent and love to laugh. I enjoy meeting new people and new experiences! I love education but not homework and am terrible at debates.

Million Dollar Memory

“In ten minutes I knew I had my next star.” Beautifully produced, Million Dollar Quartet opened Tuesday March 27 at the State Theatre. The production was highly successful at bringing the audience back to December 4, 1956 when Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee lewis, Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins got together for a “jam session” at Sun Records studio. An Overrated High School Musical

American Idiot

“Overrated High School Musical”

Blinding lights, theatrical singing, and hormonal teenagers brought me to this overrated high school musical. Tuesday, February 21, American Idiot had its opening night. based off of the band Greenday and its album American Idiot we took a look into the lives of each band member. I was intrigued by the rock concert feel. The production brought me back to memories of my first concert, No Doubt with Gwen…

Lion King

“Hakuna Matata”

“Your sense of humor never fails to abuse me” Zazu, played by; Mark David Kaplan, says this in a serious but humorous scene with Mufasa. This described the essence of the play, humorous at points put constantly playing with my emotions. Beginning to end, this captivating and inspiring play, for all ages, never had a prominent second where it failed…

Les Miserables

A Breath of Inspiration

With an extremely successful 25 years of showing and a fantastic reputation I attended Les Miserables with an inflated expectation of the well done but lengthy play. On Wednesday December 6th, Les Miserables opened at the spectacular and elegant, Orpheum theater. Our main character Jean Valjean, played by Jane Mark McVey, is an…

A Gaudy Play at Heart

La Cage Aux Folles an exuberant and gaudy play portrayed a cast full of talent. Showing at the State Theater on Hennepin the gaudiness of La cage Aux Folles was evident from the street. With a large sign and pink boas along side the red carpet the play’s environment screamed the word “gay.” La Cage Aux Folles a play about the life of a male homosexual couple who own a glamorous nightclub and… Continue
