MPR Workshop (5/9) Makeup

This past week in New York, I attended private workshops led by Broadway stage manager James Latus and Broadway actress Madeline Doherty. Notable production stage management credits of James Latus include Indecent (current), Jitney, and Hamilton. Notable Broadway credits of Madeline Doherty include Charlie & The Chocolate Factory (current), Sister Act, Gigi, Les Miserables, and the OBC of Producers. Both professionals were extremely insightful about living in the city and pursuing a…

No Day But Today- Go see Rent!

Twenty-one years ago, in 1964, Jonathan Larson changed the course of the Broadway musical with Rent, based off of Puccini’s La Bohème. The Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning rock musical/world-changer/masterpiece follows the life of seven artists struggling to maintain and balance their personal, artistic, and economic lives while they learn the importance of love and spontaneity. Set in the east village of New York during the AIDS epidemic and of the 1980’s, Rent showcases,…

You''ll Be Changed For Good!

Have you ever wondered what happened before Dorthy arrived? Well, If you’ve seen Wicked, which recently closed after a five-week engagement at the Orpheum in Minneapolis, you’ll know that Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch were once college roommates. As the show progresses, Glinda and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch, hit all of the major milestones and highs and lows of friendship, which makes the show relatable to almost everybody. Among the hundreds of Wicked veterans in the…

Don't Throw Away Your Shot!

Last week I was fortunate enough to see Broadways biggest hit, Hamilton: An American Musical written by Lin Manuel-Miranda, in Chicago. Like many of us, I had become obsessed with the Original Cast Recording. With tickets sold out through next fall and going for $700+, it seemed unrealistic that I would see the show anytime soon. Of course, upon hearing that I would be seeing the show from the second row I was hysteric. However, is the experience worth emptying your wallet…

Matilda

Many of us grew up enjoying the magical story of Matilda, weather it be the classic 1988 British novel by Roald Dahl or the 1996 film starring Danny Devito. Having premiered in the West End in 2009 before launching a US Tour, Matilda The Musical is now reaching audiences around the globe. As a fan of the movie, I was skeptical of how the story would be adapted into a stage musical. Like the novel, it follows Matilda Wormwood, a genius 5 year old with…

FUN HOME- A Must See!

Winner of five Tony Awards including best musical, Fun Home, tells the emotionally gripping true story of Alison Bechdel as she comes to terms with her sexuality. Fun Home is based off the 2006 graphic memoir of the same name and opened on Broadway in 2015, being performed in the round. This is not your typical song and dance musical, which are fun, however they are never able to move me the same way Fun Home did. If I were to compare this show to another, it would be…

Better Than Broadway - CURIOUS INCIDENT

For those unfamiliar with Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, it follows fifteen year old Christopher Boone (Adam Langdon) on a life changing journey as he tries to solve the mystery of “who killed Wellington”. Simon Stephens award winning theatrical adaptation of the story originated in the West End before transferring to Broadway two years ago.
